Workshop on Urban Mobility and Development

Jakarta with its + 10 millions population can generate serious problems when it comes to transportation system. Congestion and air pollution are indicated as the most Prominent. Accordingly, as rapid urbanizations occur elsewhere in Indonesia, the Capital no longer monopolizes this environmental issue.  To cope with that condition and to share the potential solution, UCLG ASPAC together with Provincial Government of Jakarta and supported by Korea Transportation Institute (KOTI) organize a workshop on urban mobility and development, in J.W Marriott hotel, Jakarta.

On July 29th 2013, line of urban mobility experts showcased their current findings into two sessions. Dr. Gyeng Chul Kim, President of KOTI; Mr. I Dewa Gede Soni Aryawan, Head of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) of Jakarta Capital City Government; Dr. Thomas G. Jin of KOTI; and Mr. Lim Youngmork from Government of Changwon City were among the presenters. Dr. Kim shared the essential of leadership and innovation to deal with the challenges of transportation with the examples of Bogota, Curitiba, London and Seoul Experiences. He further suggested that, in the case of Jakarta, customized policy that fits with the condition of Indonesia is needed. To implement the policy, good leadership with a clear vision and strong willingness is also required.

In another session, Mr. Lim from Changwon City shared his city’s environmental policies on promoting sustainable transportation. The public bicycle “Nubija” system was mentioned as the best practice that makes Changwon becoming role model of the local development. Good leadership and citizen participation are among the determinant factors of the policy.

Following the workshop, a field visit to Tanah Abang shopping district was arranged. Jakarta Government shared a lesson on traffic management as this district had initially been packed with street vendors. Intensive public dialogue, collaboration with private sector, and law enforcement are identified as contributing factors to the success of traffic management. The street vendors are now happily relocated in a decent building of the shopping complex.

In prior to the workshop, UCLG ASPAC Secretary General, Bernadia ; Dr.Kim; and Vice Governor of Jakarta Province Basuki T.Purnama were engaged in a mutual discussion about the possibility of Jakarta river to adapt Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon river restoration.
