West Kalimantan: Environment and Public Space

WEST KALIMANTAN is focusing on good environment for the convenience and prosperity of local people. It has started this year with the inauguration of Non-Timber Forest Product Gallery in Jalan Veteran, Pontianak City, Friday (28/01/2022) by Mr. H. Sutarmidji, Governor of West Kalimantan. At the inauguration, Governor Sutarmidji asked the Technical Implementation Unit of Forestry Management Unit to also plant herbal plants as they are useful for public.

“The products of KPH (Kesatuan Pengelolaan Hutan/Forest Management Unit) are only honey and bajakah wood (used for traditional and natural cancer medicine). They have to be innovative by planting the herbal plants to protect the forest,” said Mr. H. Sutarmidji.

The inauguration was attended by the Director of Forest Utilisation Planning, Directorate General of Sustainable Production Forest Management (PHPL), Mr. Drasospolino, the Head of Environment and Forest Agency, Mr. Adi Yani, the Mayor of Pontianak City, Mr. Edi Rusdi Kamtono, and the Leader of Family Welfare and Empowerment Mobilisation Team of West Kalimantan Province, Lismaryani Sutarmidji.

The Non-Timber Forest Product Gallery is in the City Forest next to Pendopo (a large pavilion) of West Kalimantan Governor. On the occasion, Governor also shared that the government plan to build jogging track for elderly.

“We will build the jogging track for elderly. After jogging, they can go to the City Forest and visit the Forest Product Gallery. Besides exercise, they can enjoy tour and get new knowledge,” Governor explained.

“We plan to plant some trees in front of Pendopo, such as Bilian (ulin), Bengkiray Wood, Pulai (Blackboard tree). Most people in the city do not know those trees. It will be a good place for students, from Kindergarten, Primary, to High Schools to learn about the nature,” said Governor.
