April 8-10, 2026 | UCLG ASPAC participated in the UCLG Executive Bureau meeting held in Mexico City. Secretary General Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, together with ASPAC members, actively engaged in high-level discussions and strategic meetings. The nominations of Asia-Pacific representatives for the World Organisation’s 2026–2029 leadership positions were also shared and discussed.
Asia-Pacific Representation in the World Organisation
UCLG ASPAC facilitated the participation of its members in the governing bodies of the World Organisation. During the Mexico meeting, the review of submissions for the UCLG Executive Bureau and for the UCLG Council was also made. The Organisation also expressed full support for the nomination of the Mayor of Shijiazhuang as UCLG Co-President representing the ASPAC region.
Culture, Dialogues, and Governance
The 2026 Executive Bureau meeting was enriched by the 7th edition of the UCLG–Mexico City Culture Award, held at the historic Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris. The event highlighted the role of cultural rights, care policies, and gender equality in shaping inclusive cities.
During the Executive Bureau session, Mr. Hao Zhongwei of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries made an intervention highlighting key contributions from the Asia-Pacific region. He underscored the leadership role of Chinese cities within ASPAC committees and introduced the first UCLG ASPAC–CPAFFC Young Leaders China Tour Programme. He also announced the upcoming International Friendship Cities Conference 2026 to be held in Xi’an.
In the final session, Dr. Bernadia made an intervention highlighting ASPAC’s contributions to the upcoming UCLG Congress and reaffirmed the region’s commitment to presenting its Position Paper under the Assembly Track—ensuring that Asia-Pacific perspectives remain central in shaping global policy through a bottom-up approach.
Exploring Urban Innovation and Social Inclusion
The Executive Bureau meeting also featured immersive site visits showcasing Mexico City’s forward-thinking approaches to mobility and inclusion. Beyond improving connectivity, the system offers panoramic views of vibrant rooftop murals—many created through community participation—reflecting a strong culture of civic engagement and urban creativity.
The visit continued at Utopía Mixiuhca, part of the UTOPIAS initiative (Units for Transformation and Organisation for Inclusion and Social Harmony). These integrated hubs combine social services, public spaces, and recreational facilities to promote well-being and inclusion. Designed to support women facing violence, provide harm-reduction services, and create inclusive spaces for gender and sexual diversity communities, UTOPIAS also encourage shared caregiving responsibilities. The initiative, pioneered by Mayor Clara Brugada of Mexico City, aims to establish 100 centres across the city. These visits offered valuable insights into how mobility, social services, and community well-being can be effectively integrated.
Looking Ahead
The engagements in Mexico City not only strengthened collaboration across regions but also provided valuable insights to advance sustainable and people-centred urban development throughout the Asia-Pacific.
