November 11-13, 2024 | UCLG ASPAC supported city of Jeonju in hosting Jeonju Future Cities Forum 2024, held from November 11 to 13, 2024. The event convened global leaders, experts, and stakeholders to explore practical solutions for sustainable urban development. The forum emphasised collaboration, technological innovation, and cultural preservation as critical pillars of future urban growth.
Key highlights of the forum included the Youth Session and the Youth Future Lab, showcasing the critical role of youth in shaping urban futures.
The forum began with opening remarks by Mayor Woo Beom-ki of Jeonju City, who highlighted the importance of harmonising innovation and cultural heritage. Mr Yang O-bong, President of Jeonbuk National University, underscored the transformative power of education in urban innovation. Mr. Serge Telle, former Prime Minister of Monaco, shared insights on the adaptability of cities to evolving challenges. In her congratulatory speech, Dr Bernadia introduced the concept of “Agilience,” a blend of agility and resilience essential for cities facing complex global challenges. She stressed the need for local leadership, community-driven solutions, and international collaboration to create sustainable, inclusive cities.
On the second day, the Session III: Climate Change focused on the collective responsibility of cities in addressing environmental challenges. The session featured climate and sustainability experts, including Jeff Goodell the author of the book entitled The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet, who discussed the urgency of climate action and the risks posed by rising global temperatures. Ms. Mee-ja Park, Jeonju Research Institute, President, highlighted Jeonju’s carbon neutrality strategies and sustainable tourism initiatives. Mr. Ki-tae Baek, Jeonbuk National University, Professor, delved into the role of soil management in carbon sequestration, while Mr. Wan-soo Im, School of Global Health at Meharry Medical College, Professor, explored the intersection of climate change and public health. Dr Bernadia’s moderation ensured a constructive dialogue, bringing attention to localised climate solutions and fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
The Youth Session, one of the forum’s five parallel sessions, brought young leaders and experts together to discuss innovative contributions to urban development. Speakers included Mr. Kellianne Murphy, who presented strategies for integrating agriculture into urban planning, and Mr. Saqib Mukhtar, who shared clean energy solutions. Mr. Hokyong Shon discussed Sydney’s initiatives to reduce emissions, while Mr. Ki-tae Baek and Mr. Jin-soo Hwang emphasised the role of universities in regional revitalisation and advancing life sciences. The session highlighted the importance of youth-driven innovation in shaping resilient and sustainable urban communities.
The forum also featured the Youth Future Lab, a dedicated mentoring session designed to empower young participants with practical skills and strategic thinking for addressing urban challenges. This session included interactive activities, presentations, and discussions with experts who provided guidance on leadership, adaptability, and innovation in city planning. The Youth Future Lab reinforced the message that youth are key agents of change in building sustainable and inclusive cities.
Delegates had the opportunity to experience Jeonju’s rich cultural heritage through a guided tour of the Hanok Village, known for its traditional Korean architecture and preserved history. Informal networking events, such as shared meals, allowed participants to foster collaboration and strengthen connections. The Jeonju Future Cities Forum 2024 concluded with actionable recommendations for building resilient and inclusive cities.
