March 26, 2024 | UCLG ASPAC, collaborated with SDGs Jakarta and Jakarta Provincial Development Planning Agency, convened stakeholders in an insightful “Workshop on Green Mussel Restoration and Capacity Building for Marketing Green Mussel Shell Waste Products” on March 26, 2024, at Candi Bentar, Putri Duyung Ancol. The workshop, attended by 38 participants from government officials, community leaders, environmental advocates, and corporate representatives, induced participants with the knowledge to take part in environment conservation as well as product marketing under the Kalibaru Hub Programme.
The Discussion
The environmental knowledge became the highlight of the workshop. There was a demonstration on the creation of a new green mussel habitat with wire and how the practice can help restore marine ecosystems and purify seawater instantly. This practice has proven successful in the Ancol area. Through this practical session, attendees gained valuable insights to also take part in community-driven environmental restoration practices. As Kalibaru communities also continue to seek sustainable solutions, workshops like this play a crucial role in fostering collaboration, and raising awareness, in addition to empowering local economies.
In the workshop, community leaders also discussed the ongoing processing of 80% of green mussel shell waste, emphasising the need for increased production and marketing. Additionally, Gerakan Pasti (a community group in Jakarta area) focusing on the environmental movement with the principle of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Return to Earth, expressed interest in products outcomes of the Kalibaru Hub Programme and offered support for feasibility testing and marketing. UCLG ASPAC emphasised the importance of training of community members, starting from simple marketing strategies. Finally, Kalibaru Youth Organisation expressed interest in implementing similar programmes to improve water quality in the area.
