On completion of certification actions, applicable to cities’ circumstances, cities are required to submit supporting documentation for third-party verification. Achievement of the standard required will result in automatic certification and international recognition. This will make it easier for cities to communicate their achievements transparently and build further momentum and support to improve air quality.

Certification actions are being developed via a transparent and participatory process with the establishment of Working Groups comprised of air-quality specialists and representatives from city associations, national environmental agencies, NGOs and development organizations. Working Groups are providing input on actions to be taken in the following areas 1) Air-Quality Governance and Assessment, including emission inventories and air-quality monitoring; 2) Area Sources of Pollution (Fugitive Dust Emissions Control); 3) Stationary Sources of Pollution (Industrial Emissions Control); 4) Power-Generation Emissions Control; 5) Emissions Control from Motor Vehicles (Tailpipe Solutions); and 6) Sustainable Transportation Systems (including mass transit, planning for transit-oriented development, cycling and walking). Members of Working Groups will help ensure that the certification actions are achievable, have impact and are technically defensible.
