Melaka World Solar Valley in Alor Gajah

Cities play a crucial role in accelerating the transition toward renewable energy. In Malaysia, the municipality of Alor Gajah has launched an ambitious initiative to promote solar technology development while building a sustainable urban economy.

The Melaka World Solar Valley (MWSV) project aims to establish a renewable energy innovation zone centered on solar power. Covering an area of more than 7,200 hectares, the initiative seeks to integrate green technology into urban development while creating new economic opportunities.

The project includes the preparation of the Melaka World Solar Valley Special Area Plan, which integrates sustainability principles into urban planning. Through collaboration with organisations, such as the Melaka Green Technology Corporation, the initiative supports research, innovation and commercialisation of solar energy technologies.

The development plan also includes commercial zones, an international exhibition centre and research facilities, forming a comprehensive green technology ecosystem.

Malaysia’s federal government has provided funding support for the preparation of the plan, while the total development cost is estimated at approximately RM1.59 billion, to be implemented in three phases.

Once completed, the project is expected to become a regional hub for solar technology covering research, production and practical application. In addition to advancing renewable energy adoption, the initiative aims to create jobs, support technological innovation and raise public awareness of sustainable development.

Alor Gajah’s experience illustrates how cities can align economic development with environmental sustainability by integrating green technology into long-term urban planning.
