The Jinju Namgang Yudeung (Lantern) Festival will open in Jinju, a city renowned for its global festivals, on October 5, 2024. Designated as an Honorary Cultural and Tourism Festival of Korea, this beloved global event attracts over a million visitors from both Korea and abroad each year, firmly establishing itself as one of Korea’s premier festivals.
The Yudeung Festival traces its roots to the Imjin War (1592-1593), over 420 years ago, when Korean soldiers, trapped in Jinjuseong Fortress by Japanese invaders, used floating lanterns to send military signals or messages to their families. The festival is now held in honor of the patriotic martyrs who gave their lives for the country.
The 2024 Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival will create a breathtaking nightscape by installing large lanterns that reflect the essence of K-culture and Jinju’s historical and cultural heritage along the Namgang River, beneath Jinjuseong Fortress and Chokseongnu Pavilion.
Following the opening of the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Exhibition Hall, Mulbit-Naru Shelter, and the Kim-Simin Ship last year, the newly unveiled Jinju Daecheop Square – 17 years in the making- is ready to become a new visitor favorite. This historical site, symbolising the nation’s resilience in overcoming crises, is expected to attract numerous visitors
