On the 7th April 2021, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, paid a courtesy visit to the newly elected Mayor of Surabaya, Mayor Eri Cahyadi, as an active member of UCLG ASPAC.
The courtesy visit was intended to strengthen cooperation between UCLG ASPAC and Surabaya City, particularly in the development of the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) which will be the first one to be developed in this Country. This initiative will be also joint activity between UNESCAP, UCLG ASPAC and Surabaya. It is expected to contribute to the Voluntary National Review (VNR) which is currently being prepared by the national government.
During the courtesy visit, Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi also shared another initiative of UCLG ASPAC on public space and COVID-19 at Kampung Ketandan, Surabaya, which is supported by UNHABITAT.
After having courtesy visit to the Mayor of Surabaya City, the Secretary General took opportunity to meet the Vice Governor of East Java, Mr. Emil Dardak, at his office.
In this opportunity, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi shared and presented UCLG ASPAC new Manifesto. Meanwhile the Vice Governor shared his various programs, including the local economic development by engaging young people or the “millennia”. He mentioned that with the help of ICT and digital era, the “millenia” can do a lot. And its contribution to the development has become more essential.
The meeting also brought commitment on collaboration to strengthen the capacity of “millenia” through various activities. Dr. Bernadia addressed that UCLG ASPAC is committed to involve youth as a substantial actor in achieving global agendas.
Further, the Secretary General continued to attend the VLR Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the relevant local government officials (OPD), such as the City Development Planning Agency (BAPPEKO).
In this meeting, Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi addressed UCLG ASPAC commitment to assist cities in Indonesia in preparing and developing the Voluntary Local Review (VLR) as a part of the LOCALISE SDGs output in Indonesia. And Surabaya City Government was chosen to develop the VLR to prove its commitment and priority to achieve sustainable development agenda.
UCLG ASPAC will be working hand-in-hand with Surabaya City Government to develop the VLR which will be used as input to the Voluntary National Review (VNR) to be reported by the Government of Indonesia at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July 2021.
