Sejong City Designated as a Special Opportunity Zone, Boosting Advanced Industry Growth

Located in Sejong City, Korea University of Media Arts is committed to solidifying its position as a leader in K-content production. The university has established a content production complex campus, equipped with the largest scale of practical equipment in the country, designed exclusively for students.

The university’s efforts have borne fruit, with notable achievements including:

  1. Designation as a ‘Higher Vocational Education hub district (HiVE)’ by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
  2. Receiving an A grade, the highest rating, in the evaluation of the Innovation Support Project for Junior Colleges.
  3. Selection as a pilot university for the Ministry of Education’s Meister College initiative.
  4. Participation in the LINC 3.0 (Leaders in Industry-university Cooperation) project.
  5. Designation as a Sejong Institute (selected for China and the Philippines).
  6. Support for specialised vocational colleges in emerging industries.
  7. A school that is the industry itself

Korea University of Media Arts stands out with its unique content production complex campus. Breaking away from the traditional paradigm of universities being solely educational institutions, KUMA has become a school where education, production, distribution (monetisation), and employment create a virtuous cycle.

The university provides a perfect environment for video production, where departments secure external projects, and students contribute to the production process, resulting in numerous collaborative works. Through the production of creative and convergent content, utilising cutting-edge facilities and equipment, students gain hands-on experience in their field of study.

KUMA offers students opportunities to gain direct experience in the field through collaborations with various industries. These industry-academia cooperation programmes focus on equipping students with the skills necessary to be immediately employable upon graduation. Students gain practical experience through internships at companies or media institutions, receiving tangible benefits such as job placement assistance through these programmes.

Additionally, Korea University of Media Arts operates its own business models, producing and distributing various content created on campus. One notable model is the K-Digital Video Content (K-DVC) initiative, which develops and commercialises a wide range of content, including broadcasts, films, webtoons, animations, and new media. In 2021, KUMA commercialised the independent feature art film Value Up, which won multiple awards at international film festivals, including a Silver Award at the Houston International Film Festival, highlighting the university’s growing reputation.

In the final stages of their education, students are given the opportunity to carry out their own creative projects.
