Won Hee-Ryong, the President of UCLG ASPAC and the Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, invited the Secretary General, together with UCLG ASPAC’s staff to Jeju, from 14-17 December 2014.
The visit began with the courtesy call on the President Won and the signing of MOU between UCLG ASPAC and Jeju International Training Centre or UNITAR CIFAL Jeju. Both UCLG ASPAC’s Secretary General and UNITAR’s Ambassador Jung Dal-Ho, agreed to work together for future programs and to cooperate closely in workshops and trainings on crucial issues related to local governments. To develop further ideas on the matter, a meeting between UCLG ASPAC and UNITAR was arranged.
The Secretariat also had a working-level meeting with the Staff of the Jeju Special Self-Governor Province’s Staff, to discuss about the plans and activities of 2015, and the President’s involvement.
The Secretariat had the chance to learn from Prof. Park Gyoung-Lin at the Jeju National University, about the low-carbon program of Jeju, including the Electric Vehicle Policy. The Secretariat also visited the Smart Grid Center and to the Wind Farm. The Province is developing alternative environmentally-friendly sources of energy, both by supporting electric rechargeable cars, and generating renewable energy such as wind and solar.
The Secretariat also had the chance to see the Sulmundae Women’s Center, a place where people can learn various skills, like computer or languages, which can be useful in everyday life as well in a job. The Center accommodates a Jeju’s cultural space, which includes paintings and representations of Jeju’s culture and historical women figures.
