Mayor Shelly Oberoi: Making Delhi the City It Should Have Been

Mayor Shelly Oberoi of Delhi was announced as winner of the mayoral election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on February 22, 2023. She becomes Delhi’s first female mayor. As the leader of the second largest metropolitan area in the world after Tokyo, Mayor Shelly Oberoi envisions Delhi to be cleaned and transformed. Get to know her and her vision for the city.

Shelly Oberoi joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2013. She earned her Doctoral Degree in Philosophy from Indira Gandhi National Open University’s School of Management Studies. She also received the Miss Kamla Rani Prize and a scholarship for her outstanding GPA among all students in the college. She was an assistant professor at Delhi University and Mumbai’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies and has authored several research papers on corporate social responsibility, global finance, and other topics. Further, she was appointed as Delhi AAP’s Vice President of the women’s wing.

Bringing a solid background, Mayor Shelly Oberoi, in an interview with Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, promised “Delhi will be cleaned and transformed” in her tenure. In an interview, she explored that the city will be “free from the blight of landfills where waste management systems are streamlined and cleanliness is promoted throughout the city.” She also mentioned the plan to establish a culture of transparency and accountability, ensuring a corruption-free Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Summing up, she promised to work toward making Delhi “a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable metropolis that its people can be proud to call home”.

One of her efforts captured by the media is her request to Union Finance Minister, Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman, to ensure a fair allocation of central government funds for Delhi’s development and maintenance. In the letter, Mayor Shelly Oberoi requested an allocation of Rs 10,000 crores to support the city’s needs. She expressed this gesture after noticing no support funding from the central government over the last few years.
