Mayor Seike Ai of Minato: Making Minato a People Friendly City

Mayor Seike Ai is the first female leader of Minato City. She won the election by campaigning for the realisation of “Minato Ward, an international city overflowing with love.” For her, it means making Minato an “international city that values people” or a people-friendly city, considering the location of Minato City, at the heart of the Tokyo area, where “many people come and go, and diverse range of people live”.

In her speech following the decision of her victory in the election, she mentioned her plans to make Minato a “city where kindness resonates and connects with the world.” Below are the breakdowns of her vision to realise her campaign.

  1. Making the happiest city in the world for raising children and raising an education. This includes creating childcare centres, support for children with disabilities/difficulties in attending school, children’s safety, the cost of textbooks, and support for young people to study abroad.
  2. Creating a “healthy, welfare, and inclusive city” where no one is left behind. This includes the development of “health tech” (incorporating technology into medical care and health management), creating a positive and enabling environment for parents of children with disabilities, and promoting barrier-free urban development that is friendly to everyone, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and those raising children.
  3. Creating “real disaster prevention cities” that will ensure the protection of lives through the establishment of an urban disaster prevention model.
  4. Becoming a “sustainable advanced city” in terms of art, environment, and economy. Efforts include supporting cultural and artistic activities, promoting relevant cooperation, and making Minato the centre of start-ups that solve social issues.
  5. Digital transformation and ward office reform: “A reliable, convenient and open ward office.”

Mayor Seike Ai is envisioning a better Minato for local people, making the city a more liveable place.
