Shah Alam, the capital of Selangor, has made history by appointing its first female mayor. Datuk Zabidah Safar was sworn in as the city’s 13th mayor on February 20, 2026. Tourism, infrastructure, and public services are among her priorities.
Under the leadership of Datuk Zabidah Safar, the Shah Alam City Council developed a tourism roadmap under Shah Alam Tourism Action Plan 2026–2030 to strengthen the local tourism industry. The plan aims to encourage visitors to stay longer in Shah Alam, leading to higher local spending. “This will allow economic activity to circulate within the MBSA (Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam/Shah Alam City Council) area and benefit local businesses,” she said. She also highlighted plans to enhance tourism offerings through 20 action plans and 65 initiatives, with a strong focus on digital integration. (thestar.com.my)
Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has also been working to improve the city’s mobility system. The local authority is now formally integrating e-scooters and electric bicycles into its urban development framework. The initiative also supports integrated zoning and traffic planning for upcoming LRT3 stations, including Stadium Shah Alam, UiTM Shah Alam, Dato Menteri, and Section 7. “This serves as a testing ground for the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) to develop guidelines for the use of micromobility vehicles on public roads,” she said after MBSA’s full board meeting. To improve water services in Shah Alam, the local authority has strengthened its collaboration with Air Selangor, one of Malaysia’s water supply providers. Through this collaboration, Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) aims to ensure the delivery of sustainable water services in the area. Recent discussions between the relevant parties covered the water supply operational structure, physical asset management, new water tariff rates, as well as initiatives to transition to e-billing.
