2026 ExBu Meeting Theme and Dates

The theme for the 2026 UCLG ASPAC Executive Bureau Meeting is: “Advancing Sustainable Tourism for a Resilient Future and Inclusive Economic Growth”. This theme will highlight the vital role of sustainable tourism in building resilient urban economies and fostering inclusive growth across the Asia-Pacific region. For Kendari, it aligns with the city’s mission and comes at the right time to unveil and promoteits tourism potential. Kendari bay and the beautiful natural landscapes are the city’s key assets. Besides, local culture and heritage, such as traditional crafts and unique rituals, showcase the richness of Kendari’s identity. The local government of Kendari has also proposed to include innovative tourism initiatives during ExBu, such as sail tours and dinner cruises, to create memorable experiences for residents and international visitors.

Discussions opened ways to create strategic partnerships with local business organisations, such as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) of Southeast Sulawesi, aiming for long-term collaboration benefiting the local economy. The Secretary General Bernadia praised the local government’s commitment to social welfare, providing free health check-ups and maintaining low stunting rates. She also encouraged the City Government of Kendari to develop a Voluntary Local Review (VLR).

Focus Areas for UCLG ASPAC Support

UCLG ASPAC explored several areas where the Organisation can provide ongoing support to Kendari and Southeast Sulawesi:

  • Waste Management: The IRRC initiative was discussed as a potential model for improving organic waste management in Kendari. UCLG ASPAC will also help facilitate access to financial support from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (Pekerjaan Umum dan Perumahan Rakyat/PUPR) to assist local governments in managing waste more effectively.
  • Tourism and Infrastructure Development: Kendari’s tourism potential was a significant focus, with discussions on how UCLG ASPAC Committees (Culture, Tourism, Logistics) can support the city’s growth. Emphasis was placed on the promotion of local culture, enhancing city branding, and developing the city’s tourism infrastructure.
  • Green and Sustainable Infrastructure: The mission emphasised the need for sustainable development, particularly in terms of improving green infrastructure and creating integrated, eco-friendly tourism areas that are both accessible and resilient.
