UCLG ASPAC and UNESCAP recently visited Jambi City and Malang Regency to follow up the result of the baseline survey on establishing the Integrated Resource Recovery Centre (IRRCs) and developing city-wide solid waste strategies that are pro-poor, low-carbon and financially viable of four potential locations in Indonesia. Based on the result, Jambi City and Malang Regency were selected to host the first pilot project implemented by UNESCAP and UCLG ASPAC in Indonesia.
The first field visit was in Jambi City for a coordination meeting with the Mayor, agencies and stakeholders. Jambi City is ready to host the pilot project and will support the implementation of this project. Jambi Mayor Syarif Fasha expressed confidence that through this pilot project, the municipality will be able to reduce operational and transportation costs for waste processing.
For the second field visit, UCLG ASPAC and UNESCAP made the most out of a very tight schedule in Malang Regency. The delegates started the mission by visiting the proposed location at Mantung Market to find further information on waste source, on beneficiaries, who live and/or have activities around the location.
Through this field visit, the delegates could get detailed information on organic waste resources, on energy demand at the proposed location and on the animal waste disposal plan. The plant of the pilot project in Malang Regency is not the same with Jambi City. The “Waste to Energy” plant in Malang Regency will be mixed with animal waste since there is not enough amount of municipal organic waste for the plant.
