DAEJEON, host of the 7th UCLG World Congress 10-14 October 2022, located in the Centre of Korea, has become the centre of politics, economy, society, and tourism. Daejeon has a multi-regional transportation network such as railroads, highways, and national highways, and is a hub in Korea where most major cities across the country are reachable within two hours. While preparing to attend the World Congress, below are the 12 major tourist hot spots when visiting Daejeon:

  1. O-Worl

It is the largest comprehensive theme park located in the southern area of the central region. Zoo Land, Flower Land, and Joy land are multi-thematic complexes that family members can enjoy all together.

  1. Ppuri Park (Root Park)

It is the sole park under the theme of ‘filial piety’ throughout the nation. With more than 244 sculptures and art pieces of surname that remind visitors of their family ties, visitors can also enjoy the history of genealogy at the genealogy museum.

  1. The Expo Science Park

It is a theme park to succeed and commemorate the successful holding of the 1993 Daejeon World Expo. Located near the upcoming UCLG World Congress venue, you can enjoy the symbolic Hanbit Tower, Daejeon EXPO Memorial hall, and World EXPO Memorial museum.

  1. Hanbat Arboretum

It is the largest man-made arboretum in Korea. It provides preservation of various plant species, educational space for youth, and a relaxing green area for citizens in the middle of the city.

  1. Gyejoksan Hwangtogil Trail (Gyejok Sanseong Fortress)

It is a 14.5 km long trail in Mt. Gyejoksan covered with Hwangto (red clay). In spring and fall, hikers from all over Korea gather to enjoy the landscape of Mt. Gyejoksan while hiking.

  1. Daejeon Dullesan-gil Trail

Designed to connect the mountains surrounding Daejeon in hopes of providing a convenient hike, the trail starts from Mt. Bomunsan, leading to Mt. Maninsan, Mt. Sikjangsan, and Mt. Gyejoksan.

  1. Dongchundang House

This is a separate hall built by Song Jun-gil, a scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, who came down to his hometown. The park includes a yard, a pond, and an octagonal pavilion in front of the house.

  1. Daejeon Art & Culture Complex

It is a culture belt where the Art Centre, Daejeon Museum of Art, and Lee Ungno Museum of Art connect. When the sun goes down and the lights are on, it becomes a huge artwork.

  1. Uineungjeongi Cultural Street

There are over 150 active businesses related to art and culture, and various festivals take place.

  1. Yuseong Hot Spring

Yuseong Hot Spring is the oldest hot spring among 116 in South Korea. It has the highest capacity in South Korea in terms of reservation and usage. At the hot spring theme park, there is an outdoor foot bath open to everyone for free.

Daejeon declared the year of visiting Daejeon from 2019 to 2021 and jumped into a leading tourist city, and in September 2020, it opened the Daejeon Travel Lounge, which allows tourists to visit Daejeon to provide various information and services necessary for travel in one-stop.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Daejeon UCLG World Congress Organising Committee is preparing various tourism programmes for UCLG member participants and companions visiting Daejeon. They include a K-Culture tour that tours the Korea Institute of HYO Culture Promotion, Uam Historical Park, Jungang Market, Daecheong Lake, Hanbat Arboretum, and a K-Healing tour that tours major research institutes in Daejeon, the science capital.

The 7th UCLG World Congress will be held from October 10th to 14th in Daejeon, the central city of Korea. Five Tracks will be held under the theme of ‘Local and Regional Governments Breaking Through as One’ for five days at Daejeon Convention Centre’s Second Exhibition Hall and its vicinity, which will be completed on April 22nd. In addition, the committee plans to hold K-pop concerts, smart exhibitions, and various related events during the same period so that UCLG members can enjoy Daejeon. Daejeon hopes everyone can participate in the UCLG World Congress and have a pleasant experience.

All members of UCLG ASPAC are invited to the Daejeon World Congress in which the ASPAC Council Meeting will also be held.
