Daegu Opens Chengdu Office to Strengthen International Trade and Support Expanding Businesses

On the 10th of February, Daegu City opened the “Daegu Chengdu Office” in Chengdu, China, which will serve as a key hub for enhancing international trade and cultural exchanges, as well as supporting businesses looking to expand. With the opening of the “Daegu Chengdu Office,” Daegu becomes the first city in South Korea to have a local office in Sichuan Province. Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is an economic and industrial centre, home to about 315 of the world’s top 500 companies, and is also a city rich in cultural heritage.

Since the signing of the sister city agreement between Daegu and Chengdu in November 2015, the two cities have continued their exchange and cooperation in various fields, including college students exchange through Daegu International Youth Camp, participation in art theaters, and medical tourism promotion seminars, as well as cooperation in economy, culture, and arts.

The opening ceremony was attended by key figures, including Jeong Jang-su, Vice Mayor of Economic Affairs for Daegu, Standing Committee Member of the Chengdu Municipal Committee, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Chengdu, as well as Vice President of the Sichuan Trade Promotion Committee, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Chengdu, and Director of Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) Chengdu Trade Office, along with around 30 other notable guests. Discussions focused on various exchange programmes, including a friendship football match between Korea and China and mutual art troupe invitations. They also deliberated on enhancing economic cooperation and bolstering the operational effectiveness of the Daegu Chengdu Office. Given the uncertainties in the international situation and the risks in the global economy, cooperation and exchanges with foreign countries are more important than ever. It is expected that the Daegu Chengdu Office to become a key hub for expanding economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries, helping local businesses enter China, and playing a significant role in Daegu’s leap toward becoming a global city.
