Socializing Human Rights Cities

A two-day long seminar on human rights cities was recently  performed in Central Jakarta last November 2015. Hosted by INFID and ELSAM, this national seminar is also supported by scores of parties including the Indonesian Ministry for Legal and Human Rights Affairs, the Indonesian Ministry for Social Affairs, the Indonesian Home Ministry, the National Development and Planning Agency (BAPPENAS), the Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs and the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM).

Human rigths cities is a new concept. That why, this two-day seminar  also aims to make this human right-based approach more familiar to the Indoensian society. The goal is –among others- to make cities more livable, sustainable, safer, convenient for all city-dwellers.

As ongoing efforts are in the making to make  human right cities become the nation’s concern, this human rights-based approaches will for sure create more social adaptive atmosphere to entertain the whole Indonesian citizens. To boost this public awareness, scores of human rights watch-dogs, human rights groups, academia and university students  are invited to participate this program.

Social Minister Khofifah Indarparawansa and her counterpart Minister for Legal and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly delivered their presentations over the developing story of human rights implementation in Indonesia, challenges. Minister Indarparawansa highlights the fact that Indonesian government should seriously provide accessible facilities to the disabled people.

Another important issue to be seriously addressed, she said, is good service by state officials to  provide birth certificate for those in need, mostly in remote areas.

Some presentations  were delivered by human rights activists and district chiefs on how human rights are implemented and endorsed in  their respective some regencies or  districts across Indonesia. (MH)
