THE Standing Committee of UCLG would like to celebrate the International Women’s Day by highlighting the commitment to work together with UN Women in increasing political participation of women in all spheres of government and starting with the local level.
The leadership of the UCLG Standing Committee is composed of the chairs of the regional UCLG networks of women elected representatives (in FLACMA and UCLGA) as well as the Metropolis Women Network. The Committee further counts with the participation of the City of Geneva.
On the occasion of the 56th United Nations Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York, a delegation of the UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality, led by its Chair Anne Hidalgo, 1st Deputy Mayor of Paris, held a meeting with Michelle Bachelet, Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Women, the UN Agency that promotes gender equality globally. The head of UN-Women agreed to develop a formal collaboration that would enable to foster the political participation of women in all spheres of government.
The Standing Committee will further strengthen alliances with the Huairou Commission in order to ensure closer cooperation between grassroots groups and local governments. UCLG will further work with the Gender Partnership Programme of Inter-Parliamentary Union to foster contacts among women local leaders and women MPs around the world.
The Observatory of the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life, led by the UCLG European Section, CEMR, will be launched today.
The Global Conference of Women in Local Decision Making will take place on 31 January-1 February 2013 in Paris. Please save the dates in your calendars.
