November 9, 2023 | Daegu – Cities from the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) convened in Daegu, the City of Music in Korea, to discuss “Climate Action and the Roles of UNESCO Creative Cities (UCCN Cities).” The underlying belief was that the evocative power of music should proactively raise awareness of the climate crisis and foster collaborative solutions.
The Daegu Global Forum united experts from diverse backgrounds, both local and international, including Dr. Hoesung Lee, who chaired the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change from 2015 to July 2023 and currently serves as an Ambassador of the Special Envoy for the Carbon Free Alliance. His keynote speech emphasised that climate is a global public good and that climate change is a global externality problem arising from the market failure of underpricing emissions.
Fifteen participating UCCN Cities including Ambon and Da Lat, along with representatives from climate and energy–related organisations, reiterated that climate change is a shared concern of humankind and cities play a critical role in climate change, as they are responsible for 75% of global CO2 emissions, with transport and buildings ranking among the major contributors.
The forum incorporated climate action, aligning with its purpose, including the use of recycled and eco-friendly promotional materials. Noteworthy events included a congratulatory performance by HOOLA, an upcycling band featuring instruments crafted from recycled materials, and an opera performance at the Welcome Dinner, themed around climate action, which received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Throughout the forum, in-depth discussions acknowledging the importance of transitioning to sustainable lifestyles have provided much insight, as well as altering consumption and production patterns to combat climate change. 2024 Daegu Forum is scheduled to be held October in Daegu and we look forward to welcoming you.
