UCLG ASPAC Secretary General, Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, attended the Congress of UCLG Eurasia in Kazan, Russia, and met its Secretary General, Mr. Rasikh Sagitov. The two signed an Agreement on Cooperation on Friday, 31 July, 2015.
The signing agreement was witnessed by the Mayor of Kazan, the President of Eurasia, the President of Tatarstan, Russia, and many members of Eurasia.
Given the territorial proximity, the agreement was made to strengthen further cooperation between two regional sections of UCLG to successfully and jointly implement the statutory issues on a mutually advantageous basis. Issues to focus on include international cooperation between local authorities and associations, development of partnerships and city-to-city relations.
To make sure that this will be a long-term agreement, both parties are responsible in identifying and appointing an official representative for interaction among the two sub-regions. Both also need to inform the other about ongoing programs and projects and support each other.
During her speech, the Secretary General reported about the importance of a collaboration between Asia-Pacific and Eurasia sub-regions.
“Our two regions of local government border one another and have much in common as part of the developing world and closely associated with the important BRICS economic zones,” said Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi.
“It is said that this will be the century of Asia and our common aspirations can be spectacularly affirmed through mutual agreements and co-operation.”
She also added that cities and local governments have to make the correct decisions that balance economic, environment and social dimensions and respect local culture.
She concluded by saying that this agreement must be translated into actions for a common good.
