UCLG ASPAC Champions Humanistic Urban Development at the 11th 21st Century Human Values Forum

October 31 – November 3, 2024 | UCLG ASPAC supported Andong, the active member, hosting the 11th 21st Century Human Values Forum from 31 October to 3 November 2024. The Forum focused on integrating human values into urban governance and promoting sustainable urban development.

Representing UCLG ASPAC, Ms. Noraini Roslan, Mayor of Klang, Malaysia, on behalf of the Organisation’s Secretary General, Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, emphasised on the importance of embedding humanistic principles in urban governance to build more inclusive and resilient cities on her speech.

Mayor of Andong, Mr. Gi-chang Kwon highlighted the significance of collaboration in addressing urban challenges through shared values. Delegates explored cultural landmarks, including the World Confucianism Culture Museum and Dosanseowon Confucian Academy, gaining insights into the enduring relevance of Confucian principles in governance and societal structures.

The Forum featured academic lectures from renowned experts. Professor Kim Si-beom from Andong National University discussed the critical role of youth in sustainable urban development, while Professor Lee Seok-jae, Jeonbuk National University, examined the philosophical foundations of moral governance, prompting reflection on ethical dimensions in city planning.

Policy sessions focused on practical approaches to integrating humanistic values into urban governance. Cities like Gwangju, Klang, Kamakura, and Dagupan shared best practices in heritage preservation, sustainable tourism, and promoting inclusivity within diverse urban environments. Discussions underscored the importance of education, cultural initiatives, and community engagement in fostering harmonious coexistence.

Delegates also participated in networking activities, including cultural performances, shared meals, and an exhibition at Andong International Convention Centre. These informal settings provided opportunities to strengthen connections and explore potential collaborations.

The Forum concluded with a celebratory ceremony and closing remarks from Mayor Kwon, who expressed gratitude to participants for their active contributions. The event reaffirmed a shared commitment to integrating human values into urban policies and practices.
