Towards Enriching ASEAN-Japan Local Government Cooperation

February 12, 2026 | UCLG ASPAC, as theSecretariat of ASEAN Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF), represented by Secretary General Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, attended a meeting at the Embassy of Japan in Jakarta upon the invitation of the newly appointed Ambassador of Japan to ASEAN, Mr. Yonetani Koji. The meeting set a pathway for strengthened cooperation between ASEAN local governments and Japan within the broader ASEAN–Japan partnership framework.

In the discussion, Ambassador Koji also shared his priorities for advancing ASEAN–Japan relations, including disaster management, maritime cooperation, cross-border crime prevention, and digitalisation, particularly the ethical and transparent development of artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasised the importance of ensuring that technological advancement remains human-centred and safeguards cultural values and traditions.

Both sides recognised the indispensable role of local governments in realising regional commitments, including the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. As the level of government closest to citizens, local authorities are essential in translating regional frameworks into tangible community benefits.

As ASEAN moves toward Vision 2045, partnerships with Japan, particularly in disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, peace advocacy, and digital transformation, will play a vital role in strengthening resilient, people-centred, and globally connected cities across the region.
