8-11 June 2021 | PALU – Support for post-disaster recovery in Palu (Indonesia) coordinated by a collaboration of Cities Unies France (CUF), UCLG Territorial Prevention and Crisis, and UCLG ASPAC progressed further to the engagement of larger community groups for inclusive planning.
Representatives of local religious leaders, leaders of local culture, and women, shared their needs and aspirations in the two-days Focus Group Discussion (FGD) conducted to gather insights and formulate a plan for the development of public space in Palu. The discussion was fruitful and revealed agreed principles to be incorporated in the public space development including:
- Catering the components of 1) evacuation access if disasters happen; 2) reading areas; and 3) green open spaces,
- Accommodating the needs of 1) children, inhabitants; 2) local public figures: RT/RW (leaders of the local neighbourhood), religious leader, traditional/cultural leaders, youth representatives); and 3) task force of local administration.
Further, the discussion also gathered various aspirations and inputs from community meeting for the type of public space to be developed based on the agreed principles: from the community meeting area, playground for kids, to open space for culture related activities for youth or sports activities for the community.
The community meeting also agreed on the timeline of execution:
- June 2021
- Coordination and plan alignment with multiple departments of Palu City and other stakeholders
- July – Mid August 2021
- Design and planning of the public space by the community
- End August – September 2021
- Construction
Palu City Government’s Commitment
Dr. Reny Lamadjido, Vice Mayor of Palu City, has expressed the city’s commitment to supporting the CUF-UCLG ASPAC Palu Post-Disaster Programme implementation. Vice Mayor Reny coordinated the process of working together with relevant stakeholders on the land site ownership status and survey to the site. Consultation with the local government also reached the final decision to develop the public facility on the city government’s land located at Balaroa Permanent Housing (HUNTAP) area. The land status and site plan support the allotment of the public space. Vice Mayor of Palu stated that she welcomes any support to help the community and city’s rehabilitation and reconstruction including the development of public space which is part of the mayor’s top priority programme for the next five years.
