Mayor Marjorie Ann “Maan” Ang Teodoro assumed office as Marikina’s city mayor in June 2025. By early November of the same year, just a few months into her term, she was already in the spotlight, representing the city and its local government as she accepted multiple awards recognising Marikina’s outstanding achievements across a wide range of areas.
Some may argue that Mayor Maan Teodoro was simply reaping the rewards of her predecessor’s work. While there is some merit to that view, it overlooks an important point: sustaining excellence through a leadership transition is an achievement in itself. The recognition Marikina received during her first year in office reflects the city’s ability to maintain its high standards and strong performance under her administration.
One of Mayor Maan’s flagship programmes is the Buntis Congress, an initiative organised by the Marikina City Government and held three to five times each year to provide educational and medical services for pregnant women and mothers. The programme seeks to promote maternal and child health by addressing participants’ healthcare needs through a series of lectures on prenatal and postnatal care, reproductive health, family planning, vaccinations, and other essential topics related to safe and healthy pregnancies (mb.com.ph).
In addition to health education, participants receive preliminary medical examinations, free ultrasound services, newborn screenings, and paediatric consultations for their infants. Each participant is also provided with a maternity care package containing sanitary supplies, maternity pads, two sets of newborn clothing, baby mats, and towels, helping to support both mother and child during the early stages of parenthood.
Mayor Maan Teodoro also launched the Marikina e-Concern website, a digital platform designed to streamline citizen reporting and enhance the responsiveness of the local government (pia.gov.ph). Through the platform, residents can directly report community concerns, including damaged roads and sidewalks, clogged drainage systems, malfunctioning streetlights, and other neighbourhood issues.
According to Mayor Teodoro, “By simplifying the reporting process, the city aims to empower its constituents and ensure that everyday concerns are addressed promptly and effectively.”
One of Mayor Maan Teodoro’s priorities is strengthening Marikina City’s flood mitigation efforts. These initiatives have been supported by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) of the Philippines, which turned over a new amphibious dredger to the local government. According to Mayor Teodoro, the dredging operations “…have helped to prevent heavy flooding in the city, protecting many families and communities, especially those near the river.” To further strengthen its flood control programme, the city has also invested in specialised equipment, including amphibious excavators, to sustain dredging and river maintenance activities. Although the local government acknowledges that no flood mitigation programme can completely eliminate the risks posed by extreme weather events, it remains committed to enhancing the city’s resilience, safeguarding lives and property, and ensuring that communities are better prepared for the rainy season and other climate-related hazards.
As 2025 drew to a close, Marikina City received recognition for sustaining effective governance and community resilience during a period of leadership transition. At the 2025 Urban Governance Exemplar Awards (UGEA), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) conferred five awards on the city in recognition of its outstanding performance in cleanliness, public safety, and good governance. These accolades underscore Marikina’s continued commitment to high-quality public service under Mayor Maan Teodoro’s administration and marked a strong start to her tenure.
