The implementation of the SDGs has entered its 6th year since its adoption in 2015. With the target of achieving the SDGs by 2030 to end poverty and hunger, we only have 10 years remaining to accelerate its attainment, which has been significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Apart from causing multi-dimensional consequences, this pandemic has also changed the delivery of basic services to citizens, such as education, health and social protection.
Since 2018, United Cities Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) in collaboration with the Association of Indonesian Municipalities (APEKSI) and involving other associations has been supporting the acceleration of localising of SDGs through the LOCALISE SDGs (Leadership, Ownership, and Capacities for Agenda 2030 Local Implementation and Stakeholders Empowerment) programme. Funded by the European Union, the programme has supported 30 Local Authorities (LAs) and its Association of Local AUthorities (ALAs) the programme has supported 30 Local Authorities (LAs) and its Associations of Local Authorities (ALAs) through advocacy, capacity building, and knowledge management of SDGs.
As the funding for the implementation of the LOCALISE SDGs programme will be ending in June 2021, the LOCALISE SDGs programme is a Conference on Dissemination of Learning and Programme Outcomes of LOCALISE SDGs on June 24th, 2021 at 08.30 – 14.30 Jakarta Time (GMT+7). This event is also open to the public.
As mentioned, the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has drastically changed the way of life of the world’s population. LAs play a very important role in handling, as well as recovering from pandemic, which simultaneously helps in attaining all 17 SDGs goals. In other words, effective, inclusive recovery and SDGs attainment will always be hand-in-hand.
In fact, around 65 percent of the SDGs target indicators are to be implemented at the local level and some are under the responsibilities of LAs, such as basic services to the community, local economic development, as well as local recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. To highlight the crucial role of LAs, especially amidst the current situation, this Final Conference brings the theme of “Encouraging the Acceleration of Pandemic Recovery to Accelerate the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals ”.
The conference will be opened by remarks from Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, UCLG ASPAC Secretary-General and H.E. Vincent Piket, Ambassador of the European Union to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, followed by the welcoming speech from Mr. Anies Rasyid Baswedan, PhD., Governor of Jakarta Province as Co-President of UCLG ASPAC and Chairman of Association of Indonesian Provincial Governments (APPSI).
There will also be keynote speeches by Erna Witoelar as the Board of Trustees of the Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan, three talk shows to discuss the central government’s perspective on the contribution of LOCALISE SDGs, the commitment of LAs and ALAs on post LOCALISE SDGs programme in correlation with COVID-19 recovery, and inspiration from LAs in the Asia-Pacific region for Indonesia.
Overall, this Final Conference aims to disseminate lessons learned and concrete results of LOCALISE SDGs, launch various LOCALISE SDGs’ publications or products which are accessible for public and to show the commitment of involved parties in continuing the efforts of localising SDGs in Indonesia. to show the commitment of parties who have been involved in the efforts of localising the SDGs, particularly in Indonesia.
Therefore, the event will be concluded by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UCLG ASPAC and three leading universities in Indonesia, and handover of LOCALISE SDGs output as a commitment in accelerating SDGs attainment by 2030, considering that its successful achievement is a joint-effort from all parties..
