Gebyar Ciliwung Bersih: Public Awareness Raising on River Conservation

November 23, 2024 | UCLG ASPAC joined a movement to raise public awareness on Ciliwung River conservation through Ciliwung Day 2024: Gebyar Ciliwung Bersih (Clean Ciliwung Movement/GCB)’s event located in GCB Office Compound, Jakarta, on November 23, 2024. Ciliwung is one of the largest rivers crossing the City of Jakarta that connects many important sites and functions. It has become the lifeline of the city, and its conservation plays a big role in urban development. The event attracted enthusiasm not only from the public (attended by approximately 300 participants), but also from big groups in Jakarta, including the Association of National Bottled Water Manufacturers.

The event jointly organised by GCB and UCLG ASPAC engaged the public by deepening their understanding of the environment through interactive dialogues on river conservation, an invitation to be aware of the river area condition through Ciliwung river inspection, and an encouragement to take action through tree planting activity.

Points highlighted in the interactive dialogue included thorough river management, collaboration between government and cross-sectors for river sustainability, approaches and efforts taken to tackle river challenges, and insights on actions by global communities. The event continued with river inspection, promoting public involvement to be aware of the Ciliwung River condition, and concluded with tree planting activity at the Ciliwung riverbank.

As part of its commitment to “Greening the Cities,” UCLG ASPAC contributed to the tree plantation. Contributed by UCLG ASPAC and the City of Jakarta, 165 Bamboo Trees were planted along the riverbank to support the natural integrity of the Ciliwung River.

UCLG ASPAC highly appreciates commitment of various stakeholders to take care of the environment. In line with this, UCLG ASPAC has also developed a commitment to include tree planting activity in every relevant event that the Organisation holds.
