GCoM National Workshop in Thailand: Launching of Climate Action Plans

September 15, 2023 | Hua Hin – UCLG ASPAC, Secretariat of GCoM Southeast Asia, supported the organisation of the National Workshop in Thailand under the framework of the GCoM Asia Project, in collaboration with Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation (TGO) and National Municipal League of Thailand (NMT). The workshop, attended by approximately 170 participants from 72 cities across Thailand, was the conclusion of the GCoM Asia Project in the country, and thus, also saw the launch of Climate Action Plans (CAPs) from four GCoM Pilot Cities in Thailand: Suphanburi, Nonthaburi, Mae Hia, and Hua Hin.

Under the theme “Towards Sustainable Municipalities,” the workshop discussed the backgrounds and insights of CAPs, tools to support Thai cities in achieving CAP goals, and the significance of climate reporting. Prominent experts from various institutions, such as TGO, UCLG ASPAC, CDP, and Chulalongkorn University, took part in the workshop with exemplary presentations for Thai city representatives to refer to their CAPs.

The Workshop covered various sessions, including the showcase of climate action initiatives, government tools to support cities in achieving climate goals, and ways to measure the city impact through emission reporting.

As part of the innovative climate action projects, policies, and best practices sharing, Prof. Orathai Chavalprit of Chulalongkorn University highlighted the methodology of establishing a CAP, measurements for GHG reduction, and policy guidelines for CAP and SDGs respectively. Bangkok also shared “The Bangkok Master Plan on Climate Change,” an initiative that has made remarkable achievements in climate action, such as exceeding the 2012-2023 GHG reduction target (targeted at 13.57%, achieved 24% reduction rate) and the potential to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This workshop concluded a series of GCoM national workshops in Southeast Asia, aiming at providing a platform for GCoM signatories in each country to connect with each other and learn climate technology, innovation, and finance from the experts. The first workshop was organised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 14-15 June 2023; the second in Nha Trang, Vietnam on 6-7 July 2023; the third in Jakarta, Indonesia on 30-31 August 2023.
