20 October 2021 | UCLG ASPAC is glad to witness the establishment of the UCLG ASPAC Tourism Committee led by Xi’an conducted on the occasion of Euro-Asia Economic Forum, a state-level large-scale institutional forum approved by China’s State Council in 2005, whose permanent site lies in Xi’an. This event was also supported by UCLG.
UCLG ASPAC Tourism Committee is established to be a platform for the exchanges of experience, the spread of wisdom, and the facilitation of cooperation. Establishing the Committee, Xi’an hopes to strengthen urban resilience and restore and promote the recovery of the tourism industry together with all other member cities.
Li Mingyuan, Mayor of Xi’an and UCLG Co-President highlighted how the Pact for the Future promoted by UCLG, provides a great source of inspiration for Xi’an to improve city governance and continue learning at the centre towards sustainable development for all.
In the opening remark, UCLG ASPAC Secretary General Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, emphasised that tourism plays a key role in the social economy, cooperation and development. “The Committee on Sustainable Tourism of UCLG ASPAC is a golden opportunity to embrace the culture as 4th pillar in local tourism and economic strategies.”
Secretary General of UCLG World, Emilia Saiz, emphasised how equality and empathy need to be motors of our Pact for the Future. “We need not only public basic services to be turned towards care, but also we need culture and solidarity at the centre of development.”
On the occasion, Xi’an also launched the ‘7 Keys Workshop’ to sort out the key to cultural protection and the promotion of sustainable development, through observation, analysis, discussion, and exploration. The City of Xi’an is the only city in Asia and the Pacific Region that localises the “7 Keys” by emphasising the cultural dimension as one of the aspects in the city’s development.
UCLG ASPAC congratulates Xi’an for the great initiative and commitment towards sustainable urban development through the incorporation of culture and sustainable tourism. We are looking forward to supporting you!
