CRIC: Climate Action Plan Training in 2022

January 2022 | UCLG ASPAC’s collaborative programme with the European Union (EU), Climate Resilient and Inclusive Cities (CRIC) resumed the Climate Action Plan (CAP) Training in 2022. Supported by technical partner CCROM SEAP IPB, the CAP Training is designed to enhance the local governments’ capacity and knowledge about climate change and covers both climate change adaptation and climate change mitigation. It has helped local authorities to have a hands-on experience on calculating the data and information to be reported to Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry data dashboard platforms: SIDIK and SIGN SMART.

These trainings were held on hybrid mode in Pangkalpinang, Ternate, Mataram, Banjarmasin, and Samarinda. Participants included members of Climate Change Working Groups and key stakeholders of respective cities.

The training also became space for dialogue among local authorities and knowledge exchange on the existing good practices at the city level. A representative of Banjarmasin City’s Department of Environment, said that they have registered 17 Climate Villages to Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia. They have also documented greenhouse gas inventory every year, conducted climate change awareness campaign, and carried out various joint environmental research in Banjarmasin.

Other CRIC’s pilot city, Samarinda, also shared their experience. Vice Mayor of Samarinda, Mr. Rusmadi conveyed Samarinda City’s commitment to address environmental and climate change issues. In terms of programme, Samarinda City has installed Flood Early Warning System and carried out an action to reforest the Riparian Zone of Karang Mumus River. “The development and economic growth of Samarinda City would be nonexistent if we have not solved negative impacts on the environment”, he explained.

The series of training and technical assistance in January were part of five CAP Trainings provided by CRIC programme to its 10 pilot cities in Indonesia. By the end of the training series, the Climate Change Working Groups of target cities will have the knowledge and skills to produce inclusive climate action plan that is due in October 2022. Further capacity building on alternative and sustainable financing will follow.

To expand the awareness raising efforts, UCLG ASPAC CRIC programme will also conduct knowledge sharing sessions in various related climate and resilience platforms and events. Stay tuned for further updates!
