Child-Friendly Public Transport Education in Jakarta

As urban rail networks expand rapidly in many cities, ensuring that younger generations understand how to safely use public transportation is becoming increasingly important. Jakarta has taken an innovative approach by introducing child-friendly educational tools that promote safe and responsible use of rail transit.

In recent years, Indonesia has significantly expanded its metro and light rail systems. With more residents relying on public transportation, improving awareness of safety rules and station facilities has become a priority—especially for young passengers.

To address this need, Jakarta introduced the Navi Station initiative, an educational toolkit designed for children aged 5 to 7. The toolkit helps young learners understand how train stations operate and how to use public transport safely.

The educational package includes interactive materials such as building blocks, activity books, play mats and paper craft models. These materials incorporate railway symbols and mascots, making the learning process both engaging and easy to understand for children.

The toolkit’s content and learning approach were validated by preschool teachers and evaluated through pre-tests, post-tests and classroom observations to ensure educational effectiveness.

The initiative adopts a “pentahelix” multi-stakeholder model, involving the Bandung Institute of Technology, the Jakarta Transportation Authority, rail operators, small and medium enterprises, schools and community groups. Indonesia’s Ministry of Education also supports the implementation of the programme.

By combining education with play-based learning, the initiative helps children develop awareness of public transport safety at an early age. Jakarta’s experience demonstrates how cities can promote responsible use of urban infrastructure through innovative and inclusive public education.
