Mayor Malti Rai is the first female city leader of Bhopal, India. Since taking office in 2022, she has launched initiatives aimed at paving the way for progressive urban development. Among her flagship initiatives is the Mayor Helpline, through which Mayor Malti Rai engages directly with citizens to understand and resolve local challenges. She consistently monitors the process to ensure that feedback is provided promptly. Media reports have highlighted her proactive leadership, noting that in cases of delayed responses, she personally contacts the concerned department officials and reaches out to residents to ensure their concerns are fully addressed.
Under the leadership of Mayor Malti Rai, Bhopal has received a Presidential Award as one of the top-performing cities in the “Million-Plus Cities Category”, based on the results of Swachh Survekshan 2025, a survey conducted to recognise cities across India for their excellence in cleanliness and sanitation. “This achievement is a result of the cooperation and awareness of the dedicated employees of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Safai Mitras, officials, and above all, the people of Bhopal,” said Mayor Malti Rai.
In 2023, Bhopal also launched India’s first city-level Voluntary Local Review, supported by UN-Habitat. “As a community, Bhopal is committed to the objectives of Agenda 2030, and we pledge to work tirelessly in the coming years to achieve the goals. I hope that this VLR enables us to showcase our work internationally and access platforms where we can learn from the global best practices,” said the Bhopal Mayor Ms. Malti Rai.
