Kalibaru Hub Project: Green Light to Take Further Actions to Support Community

August 2024 | UCLG ASPAC highly appreciates the commitment of various stakeholders to support the development of community in the Kalibaru Hub Project located in northern side of Jakarta. After close coordination, UCLG ASPAC is now leading further process in enhancing community’s capacity, through purchase of supporting production tools and planning a series of workshops and trainings. As the process of production tools purchase started, UCLG ASPAC also began the series of capacity building activities to empower the local people.

The first capacity building activity is Workshop and Simulation on Green Mussel: Environment Recovery and Waste Management Process-On Site, conducted on August 15, 2024, in Koperasi Cangkring with practical training at water areas nearby (RW 01). Organised in collaboration with PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, the workshop attracted 26 participants coming from Kalibaru area (and even beyond). The discussion focused on recovering the polluted water areas (particularly in Kalibaru) to restore the marine biota so that local people can easily catch the green mussel for their livelihood. It featured a comprehensive presentation and demonstration led by representatives of the Ancol team, highlighting the critical role of green mussels in maintaining ecosystem balance, acting as natural filters in the aquatic environment. This initiative is part of the broader efforts to address contamination in the waters of beach in Kalibaru caused by industrial and household waste which threatens both marine and human life.

The first workshop brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from the Regional Planning Agency (Bappeda) of Jakarta Province, the SDGs Secretariat, and the Kalibaru Village Government Office.

Through this workshop, participants were further equipped with practical knowledge and skills for sustainable green mussel waste management, directly addressing the unique environmental challenges faced by Kalibaru. Participants outside Kalibaru also got the benefits as they got fresh insight on environmental restoration which they could adjust following conditions in their respective areas.
