6th UCLG ASPAC Congress, for Asia-Pacific’s Future

ON September 5-8, 2016, UCLG ASPAC held its 6th Congress taking on theme “Region, Life and Culture in New Urban Agenda” in Jeollabuk-do, Gunsan. In collaboration with Jeollabukdo’s local government, the congress gave highlight on how Asia-Pacific’s richness, from its regional life and culture can become a solid foundation for urban life to develop more and more and eventually give better life to citizens.

Its theme was reflected in all sessions prepared, from pre-congress sessions, panel sessions, as well as networking sessions, discussing ranges of topics, such as Regional Dialogue on Enabling Environment Rating, Leadership in New Urban Agenda, Localizing SDGs, Urban Innovation, Public Space, and Enhancing City Resilience. Lively discussions and high involvement of all participants made the sessions were more alive. Carrying the same vision and hope, local leaders united and declared their determination to provide better life for their citizens, or called as “Jeollabukdo Declaration”.

The enthusiasm was also shown at discussion in series of activities in Executive Bureau Meeting. Members were highly involved in the discussion and decision making process regarding issues in UCLG ASPAC as well as wider scope in UCLG. The discussion eventually determined several points regarding presidency and co-president election.

In president and co-president election, Mr. Won Hee-ryong was again re-elected as President of UCLG ASPAC and Mr. Emil Dardak, the elected Co-President, along with Doramani Paudel and Ranjit S. Chavan. At the end of the event, UCLG ASPAC could still feel the enthusiasm and expectation of all participants to implement the pledge of action that was signed together.
