Highlights

Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia’s capital city, located about 40 kilometers east of the country’s ocean port, Port Kelang, on the Malacca Strait.

As Malaysia’s largest urban area, it is also the transportation hub for Peninsular Malaysia, and thus excels in banking and finance, as well as tourism. Today, it is impossible to overlook the city’s global symbol, the PETRONAS Twin Towers.

Kuala Lumpur, which translates as “muddy estuary” in Malay, is perched on a ridge near the confluence of the Kelang and Gombak rivers. Kuala Lumpur experiences high temperatures and varying humidity throughout the year due to its tropical climate and proximity to rainforests, with an average annual rainfall of 95 inches.

As a result, disaster preparedness and risk reduction are being prioritised by the city of Kuala Lumpur.
