The Worldwide Initiative for Safe Schools is led by UNISDR with the active support and contribution from the Global Alliance members. It promotes a three-pillar approach to school safety:

  • Disaster resilient learning facilities.
  • School disaster and emergency management.
  • Risk reduction and resilience education.

WISS is also mobilizing the political commitment of a growing number of interested governments in assuring the safety of schools and will be announced at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (14-18 March 2015, Sendai, Japan).

The Global Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience in the Education Sector is a group of institutions from the UN and civil society involved in and committed to building disaster resilient communities and nations through enhanced disaster risk reduction education and knowledge. This alliance is chaired by UNESCO and includes UNICEF, UNISDR, the World Bank/GFDRR, Save the Children, Plan International, World Vision, IFRC, INEE and COGSS as core members.
