The 5th Guangzhou Award Shortlist Release

Since its establishment in 2012, the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) has successfully held 4 editions and it is currently in its 5th cycle this year. Over the years, the Guangzhou Award has become an important knowledge platform for the local implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and New Urban Agenda. With the call for submissions ended in late October 2020, the 5th Guangzhou Award has received 273 submissions from 175 local governments in 60 countries and regions.

The Technical Committee (TC), comprised of 11 international experts across 16 time zones, met virtually for the first time to select a shortlist of 15 outstanding initiatives. Meeting virtually was no small task and the Committee’s work took 16 days to complete. The selection process involved three stages: a qualifying list of 87 initiatives; a long list of 45 deserving initiatives; and a shortlist of 15 outstanding initiatives. The shortlist will be forwarded by the TC to an independent Jury due to take place this year.

The press-briefing on the shortlist release of the 5th Guangzhou Award will take place at 15:30-16:30 (UTC+08:00) on 3rd February 2021 and will be live on Zoom. TC members will come and share information on the TC meetings and comments on the shortlisted initiatives.
