KALTIM Virtual Tourism Expo 2021: UCLG ASPAC’s Support for Tourism Recovery under the LOCALISE SDGs Project

As the COVID-19 pandemic hits its one-year mark in March 2021, its effects still affect many sectors in Indonesia, particularly tourism. The tourism industry is still not able to fully operate.

However, this pandemic also gives us an opportunity for readjustments of strategy, such as in guaranteeing safe domestic tourism during the times of economic recovery. It includes digital marketing of various attractive domestic tourism in providing beneficial choices and safe tourism for potential tourists.

In this spirit, the East Kalimantan Tourism Office holds its fourth virtual event called KALTIM Tourism Virtual Expo 2021: “Discover East Borneo, Paradise of the East”. Being part of a success story, this virtual expo is a follow-up action of East Kalimantan’s active participation in the virtual events held by LOCALISE SDGs – a project by UCLG ASPAC in collaboration with APEKSI (Association of Indonesian Municipalities) and co-funded by the European Union.

Kalimantan Province is one of the 5 selected LOCALISE SDGs target areas to receive technical assistance for tourism recovery. This is hugely because LOCALISE SDGs, through UCLG ASPAC believes in the influential role of local governments in recovery of the tourism sector towards innovations such as the KALTIM Virtual Tourism Expo 2021 – a product of cooperation between East Kalimantan province and PT. KA Wisata.

Innovation is a key aspect in reviving the tourism sector as highlighted by Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, particularly as it contributes to several SDGs goals. This includes Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 10 on Reduced Inequalities and Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Further, she addressed that virtual expo is one of the innovative efforts that can be done, providing sufficient information to the public on tourism in certain areas, in the case of KALTIM Tourism Virtual Expo, tourists will know better the potential tourisms in East Kalimantan Province that are interested to be visited once the pandemic ends. It also can set a good example for other local governments to revive the tourism industry and contributing to the achievement of SDGs.

This virtual expo presents 20 virtual stands promoting various potentials of East Kalimantan such as festivals, craft, food, and all about the application of CHSE (Cleanliness, Health, Safety, Environment) protocols in East Kalimantan’s tourism industry. From March 1st till April 1st, the KALTIM Virtual Tourism Expo 2021 presents booths of the Tourism Office of East Kalimantan Province and its cities, UCLG ASPAC under the LOCALISE SDGs programme, the East Kalimantan Tourism Industry Promotion Board, the Kalimantan-Sulawesi Regional Indonesian Tourism Student Association and many more.
