1. UCLG Statutory Meetings: ASPAC Congress: 3-6 September2014, Taipei

Governor Won Hee-ryong was elected as UCLG ASPAC President at the Taipei Congress and he stressed that he would put more effort into ASPAC member capacity building, and in motivating members to work together with more participation in UCLG World events. He will serve for two years until the next UCLG ASPAC Congress in 2016.

2. UCLG Committee on Culture Meeting: 28 September- 2 October 2014, Buenos Aires

As one of the Pilot Cities for Culture, Jeju Province participated in the UCLG Committee Meeting on Culture where the main events included input for the new Agenda for Culture and urban renewal projects integrating culture. Cities from Mexico, Canada, and Peru including Bilbao and Barcelona presented their culture.

At the presentation, a representative from Jeju’s Cultural Policy Division showcased the island’s unique cultural features such as indigenous shamanistic rituals, shrines, stone fences, women divers and walking trails. Fifteen hundred people joined the culture event and expressed strong interest in how culture can help rebuild our community.

3. Chair of UCLG Committee on Culture came to Jeju Island for the inspection of Jeju’s Cultural Agenda

As a member of Pilot Cities for Culture, Jeju Province received Ms. Catherine Cullen, Chair of UCLG Committee on Culture, for her due diligence on Jeju’s comprehensive culture including facilities, civic participation in cultural affairs and policy, cultural events and many other perspectives of culture as one crucial factor of sustainable development.

During her visit, she engaged in a seminar of local experts on culture in various fields. The inspection schedule included meetings with local artists, residents, Jeju women divers and site visits to shamanistic shrines, an open-house project, an art trail, artist village, and local markets.

After the examination, a final report was to be presented at UCLG Culture Summit 2015 to be held in Bilbao, Spain from 18-20 March, 2015.

4. UCLG Statutory Meetings:  UCLG World Council: 23-25 November 2014. Haikou

Vice Governor Park Jeong-ha attended UCLG World Council Meeting in Haikou on behalf    of Governor Won Hee-ryong, President of UCLG ASPAC, and presented to UCLG members on Jeju’s activity in regard to the Pilot Cities for Culture and Capacity Building Program for ASPAC members, which is co-organized by UNITAR Cifal Jeju for 2015.

The one-year program includes two workshops, with themes related to climate change and tourism. The first one is scheduled for 18-22 May and the last day of the workshop is organized as one of 60 sessions in the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity to be held from 20-22 May, 2015. The participants are local government officials with expertise related to the theme, and the financial support will be provided by Jeju Province.

5. UCLG ASPAC Secretariat visited Jeju

 Period of Program: 14 -17 December 2014

For better communication and understanding between ASPAC Secretariat and Jeju Province, the Governor of which is the ASPAC President, ASPAC Secretariat was invited to Jeju for four days. The delegation headed by  Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, met with Governor Won Hee-ryong, President of UCLG ASPAC, on 15 December.

During the visit the Secretariat concluded an agreement with UNITAR Cifal Jeju for business cooperation. Five delegates also visited major project sites, such as a windmill farm and Jeju Smartgrid Center, and they received presentations about Jeju’s grand vision to become a carbon-free island by 2030

6. UCLG Retreat and Campus

Mr. Kim Yang-bo, International Cooperation Director, joined the first Retreat and Campus of UCLG, held in Barcelona, Spain.

At the Presidency Meeting, Jeju announced the UCLG activity in the areas of culture and capacity-building for members of the ASPAC Region. In a separate meeting with UCLG World Secretary General Josep Roig and UCLG ASPAC Secretary General Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Mr. Kim suggested a joint cooperative program such as Disaster Response Strategies for Internationally Protected Islands and Coastal Areas, or World Environmental Hubs, a global evaluation and certification system for sustainable societies.

7. UCLG Culture Summit 2015

Period of Program: 18 – 20 March 2015

Governor Won Hee-ryong of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province attends the UCLG Culture Summit 2015 as a speaker at the Opening Ceremony, in the capacity of President of UCLG ASPAC. He will deliver a speech on the diversity of culture in the ASPAC Region and its efforts to embrace culture in local policy for sustainable development.

He will also express the intention of Jeju Province to serve as coordinator of the ASPAC Committee on Culture under consideration for establishment. In so doing, Jeju will share its Pilot Cities experience with ASPAC members to enhance awareness about the importance of culture in tourism and other industries, not only to boost the local economy but also to enhance the quality of citizens’ lives.
