Hang Tuah Jaya Expressed Interest to Partner with GCoM in Addressing Climate Change

20 January 2020 | HANG TUAH JAYA – The Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) Southeast Asia (SEA) is gaining more traction as Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal (HTJMC) expressed its interest to join the network. GCoM SEA was launched in September 2018 to galvanise Southeast Asian mayors’ concerted actions to address the urgent climate situation through a broad range of the activities and technical cooperation. The initiative is implemented by the International Urban Cooperation Asia (IUC), funded by the European Union (EU). UCLG ASPAC serves as GCoM SEA Secretariat and its cities and local governments networks form a backbone of this effort.

Upon the invitation of HTJMC, an introductory discussion was conducted to exchange information and explore possible participation and collaboration of HTJMC.  The meeting was chaired by the Council Secretary and attended by HTJMC officials, UCLG ASPAC’s Strategic and Capacity Development Manager Maizura Ismail, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), as GCoM’s technical partner.

As the capital city of Malaka state, Malaysia, HTJMC has already launched its Greenhouse Gas inventory and plans to launch their Climate Action Plan soon. HTJMC viewed GCoM as a learning opportunity to further strengthen its commitment to promote climate change adaptation and building resilience. HTJMC expressed that the city’s involvement in GCoM will reinforce its effort in setting examples for other cities on climate actions and enable HTJMC’s goal to become a champion in the development of cities’ climate action plans.
