News from the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR)

Mr. Frederic Vallier from Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), European Section of UCLG, emphasized that this year is an important time for UCLG. Discussion for the Post 2015 is currently conducted, thus the network should put more effort in reshaping its strategies for a better image of the organization. He also agreed to have more collaboration between regional sections and committees to deliver more value to members. Learning the huge benefit from the retreat, he hoped that it can be frequently organized by UCLG.

He added that the 1st Retreat for UCLG has become a fruitful gathering to enhance cooperation among local governments in Europe and especially to address the developing crisis in Ukraine. “I think, this is the first time in the history of UCLG where all members across Europe can sit together and share their common concerns and hopes related with the crucial crisis in Ukraine,” said Mr. Vallier. “It is in this opportunity that all members of the CEMR feels morally and politically motivated to work together on peace building capacity, mostly in Ukraine.

He also said that the issue is crucial as each local government is expected to closely work together with national government to be more responsible on matters related with peace building in the country.

On how European local and national governments can work together with UCLG ASPAC members, Mr. Vallier optimistically hope that cooperation could easily bridge common issues like peace and capacity building. “Each region is totally different,” said Mr. Vallier.  “But we can be a united voice when dealing with the humanity’s common concern.” (MH)
