Cooperation with UN ESCAP on Waste-to-Energy Project

TWO officials from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) directly from its headwuarters in Bangkok came to visit UCLG ASPAC’s Secretariat on mid March. UN-ESCAP’s Economic Affairs Officer from the Environment and Development Division, Lorenzo Santucci, along with his  colleague Joao Aleluia, Project Coordinator, came to Indonesia to visit the cities nominated to become the host of the pilot project of UNESCAP’s Solid Waste Management initiative. These cities were Jambi, Malang City, Malang Regency and Probolinggo.

They were accompanied by professional field researchers as ground consultants, as well as by UCLG ASPAC’s Programme Associate Galih. It has not yet been decided which city will host this project.

Despite the tight schedule and time constraints, the representatives managed to set up meetings with local officials in Jambi, Malang City, Malang Regency and Probolinggo to discuss matters related to the project. Further discussion on analysis and collected data, was later carried on by UN ESCAP, UCLG ASPAC and the related consultants. This was done in order to determine the next steps of the project.

Following the visit to the four cities, Lorenzo Santucci and his colleague reaffirmed their strong commitment that this project will be soon implemented in the most feasible among the nominated cities.  Both UN ESCAP representatives expressed their gratitude for UCLG ASPAC’s strong commitment to facilitate this project.
