Addis Ababa Highlighted Financing for Development

Global attention was given to Addis Ababa when the city hosted a major UN Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3) from 13-16 July 2015 that questioned financing mechanisms for implementing the Post-2015 Agenda.

Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, Dr. Bernadia I. Tjandradewi, joined the Conference and spoke at the side event on “Mobilizing Domestic Financial Resources for Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Development” organized by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development in collaboration with Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), KfW Development Bank and UN-HABITAT.

The Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments (GTF) initiated by UCLG has been following the preparatory process for FfD3 since last year. It participated in the Public Hearing in New York last April and as an observer in the Drafting Committee. The GTF has made recommendations and proposed amendments to the draft outcome document to the co-facilitators of the negotiations on behalf of its members.

UCLG has welcomed the Addis Ababa Action Agenda agreed at the Conference as an indispensable tool to implement the Post-2015 Agenda. However, GTF has warned of an excessive dependence on private sector infrastructure investments, and of the potential negative effects on social inclusion and environmental protection of such a policy.
